The Vyner Studio enjoyed a great screening by German artist Robert Seidel on two different dates:

For the opening on 3rd Saturday Seidel attended the event.
A quieter date than the usual busy First Thursday (second and last screening) allowed me to have a chance to talk to the artist about his work, his references and the intense process of work that results on what we us, the spectators contemplate in calm, almost effortlessly.

Robert likes to call his work moving paintings rather than video. Looking at the selection of works by Seidel we screened at The Vyner Studio, I did actually wonder what type of work would have certain past painters develop with the technology that surrounds us nowadays...

From 20 September to 6 October the Barcelona brand will be the subject of an exhibition organised by The Vyner Studio, Barcelona Design Centre and GR Industrial Design.

From 20 September to 6 October Barcelona's design scene will be showcased in London. To coincide with the London Design Festivaland the 100% Design 2011 fair, the contemporary art gallery The Vyner Studio is hosting the exhibition “Barcelona Design meets London Design”, featuring 4 professional studios from Barcelona and 2 studios based in London: AloyMas, Causas Externas, GR Design, Tomás Alonso, Oscar Diaz and OutOfStock.

The main aim of this exhibition, organised in conjunction with Barcelona Design Centre (BCD) and GR Industrial Design, is to promote the Barcelona brand and identify it with the international design world. The initiative similarly seeks to support the internationalisation of the Catalan companies that will be present in London during the week in question and raise the profile of Barcelona's design industry amongst British studios.

The United Kingdom is currently one of the key markets for Catalonia-based design services firms. London has long been regarded as one of the design capitals of the world, and is home to prestigious institutions such as the Design Council, the Design Museum and the Royal College of Art. Featuring more than 200 activities organised by almost 160 organisations and companies, the London Design Festival 2011 is one of the top events in the sector.

Hi,

Although I don´t often post things related to hospitality, today I would like to introduce you to two places that are worth visiting.

First, Buenavista in San Sebastian, Basque Country.

A second house in my childhood. A family run restaurant with amazing views overlooking the sea at the top of Igueldo Mountain. This views were one of my first inspirations to paint, wich I depicted on a serie of three oil paintings.

Eneko Irizar, my good friend and school mate that I grew up with, leads the kitchen with the best views I have ever seen and that delivers amazing food and desserts.
Arantxa Irizar, an aunty to me, was actually the first person that bought my art. I now smile looking back and remembering those paintings that helped me on my trip moving to London, ten years ago.

The second place is El Baruco de Anero in the outskirts of Santander. Alfonso Ruigómez, has built a restaurant that is already having good reviews and he has done it all from scratch. Well done Alfonso!

über kitsch - german contemporaries takes place at the Vyner Studio in East London, 2nd til 4th September 2010. 7 young artists from fine art academies in Nürnberg and München combine living tradition with a playful freudian irony to create a happy but broken nostalgia. Colourful camp oil paintings, animation videos and quirky photographies let your living room die a pink retro death. Sigmund freud was from austria, which feels much closer to artists from cozy southern german cities like Munich or Nuremberg than cold Prussian north. Kitsch ‘n‘ sink rules! Less is a bore. too much is not enough.

1300 visitors at Michal Cabaj One Man Show at The Vyner Studio!

"Only one letter makes a difference between the lips and lies. But one can not do without the other. From the distance you see the lips...when you come closer you´ll see two slugs...come even closer and you will see hundreds of worms forming the slugs...it´s like unfolding the truth - sometimes the deeper you go the more disgusting it gets. But from the distance it´s really pretty...A lie" (Michal Cabaj)

For Michal Cabaj every painting has a story. Texts like this accompained the paintings and drawings that were exhibited at The Vyner Studio yesterday on the busiest night at the gallery ever.

The visitors could get a close look at the inner world of an artist who´s work goes deep.

From here I would like to congratulate Michal for a show that people will remember.

Painting Performance at Lord Napier / Iker García Barrenetxea

As promised the Lord Napier got covered in paint. It was a great experience to do this painting performance wich I hope people enjoyed.

In resume, about 14 hours over Saturday and Sunday of full on painting. I used a lather with three legs that put my life at "risk" and I guess that added a bit of excitement to the viewer...

I had a very young art critic that said to me that the painting was scary...(he was six), but hey, it´s an opininion to take in account.

A review of the festival by Clare Callan for Run Riot would say:

"Stepping off the train the next day we came upon a performance artist with a gaggle of people watching him, he seemed to be in character as some kind of prophet of doom, “see” said my friend “apocalypse.” (read the rest of the article)

On Sunday I already felt the pain of this overexercise that was doing such a large painting in a short period of time, but at the same time I had a great feeling. I had lots of fun and I think that people enjoyed the show. Friends looked after me bringing me beers, coffee and food, also the organizers and volunteers that did a great job.

Although I couldn´t see much of the festival I heard great things about it and I saw people definetly having a great time. Well done all the artists and people of Hackney Wick!!

Finally I have already seen nice pictures of the performance, that will serve me as a way to rememner this experience.

INTERACTIVE FIRST THURSDAY AT THE VYNER STUDIO

So here there are a few more pictures of the event last Thursday.

On the hat, Francisco Centofanti, the invited artist to play with the Cube.

It was great to see how everybody got involved drawing over the lines of a painting-drawing where the theme is actually the action of drawing. From kids to adults, groups to individuals, it seemed that everybody felt confortable to perform on their own way.

The action of drawing or painting takes many decissions that end up composing a final result: the art work.
I found very interesting inviting the visitor to add something on a big scale painting-drawing. Every sentence or drawing was a decission to keep developing one whole image.
At the end, a transformed image made by the artist, and followed by the people.

It was my pleasure to invite all of you to my creative process.

FIRST THURSDAY JULY AT THE VYNER STUDIO

Hi there!

How are you?

Busy days...very very busy days these ones for me...The Vyner Studio is absorving all my time (in a very good way) and that´s the reason why I have not been posting as much stuff as I used to.

Now, in another level, a further step, I am having real contact with a serie of artists that are either creating at The Vyner Studio using it as their studio space or actually exhibiting their work.

Being in contact with all these artists and having seen like I have more than 2000 people visiting the actual space over the last 3 months makes me very proud : ).

At the moment exhibitions are being schedulled and I will soon present a programme untill October.

On last Thursday I exhibited my work and the invited artist was Francisco Centofanti who showed his art work but also did a painting performance encouraging people to take part in it as well.

On this pictures, some paintings I presented for this exhibition, where the blackboard and chalk where the main media.

I´d like to invite to the new real thing: The Vyner Studio, where hopefully I will showcase many artists that I have selected for this blog.

I am sooooooooo proud to announce the first artist led course:

On a visit to Pure Evil Gallery this afternoon I managed to see the hanging of the following show wich opens tonight.

At the very last minute I have joined the cause, so I am actually exhibiting and donating a framed drawing of measures 83 x 64 cm.. All the money goes for the charity.

New Studio in London

Hi!

I have a call for artists and individuals or collectives for a new studio/project:

This is a call for artist led courses/workshops, language teachers and anyone that might be interested in using a big studio space (most of the space of a 650 sq. ft. available). The space is on a second floor and has very good light (facing South). It´s also in a very good location for transport, near Vyner Street, London East End.

I provide chairs and desks for up to 20 people, 32" flat screen TV that can be connected to your computer for your lessons. Internet provided as well.
Central heating and receptionist at the entrance. The building is shared by architects and creative people.

Please, send me your proposal for a short course-activity or long term for availability and I will let you know about prices (very reasonable).
At the begining of April the space will run Yoga lessons and Spanish lessons as well. If you are also interested on booking a course you can e-mail me to garcia.iker@gmail.com and I will pass you information about the teacher and prices as well.

Noventa Grados

It seems a long time ago, and it actually is a while ago..., that I decided to print some of my oneline drawings on t-shirts. I am talking about 2002, in London. It was a nice experience to wear my drawings and see people wearing them. I used to have my store at the Old Spitalfields Market on Thursdays and the big day: Sunday.

I have not printed any t-shirts for a while now although a lot of people ask me about them every now and then. Therefore I am considering to do so and I´d like to let you know about this initiative. Noventa Grados in San Sebastian is the last place where they were available while exhibiting Inside Out.

Yesterday I visited Pure Evil Street Art Gallery and I discovered Collin Van Der Slujis, an artist from The Netherlands who is showing about six works this time. I´ve just checked his website and here´s a litte selection of works I liked. Twisted and dark, animals and people brought to the canvas with some registers that reminded me of Basquiat and some of Brazilian Os Gemeos. I recommend you to go along and see it by yourself, as paintings always look different in reality.

Fantasia- Night on Bald Mountain

Fantasia, a classic in animation by Walt Disney. I am amazed to find out that it was first produced in 1940!!!
I was very little when I went to the cinema to watch this film although I have a clear image of that day. For a kid this film (and also for adults, although some might have lost this ability...) it is simply food for the imagination. "Fantastic" music directed by Leopold Stokowski for a "fantastic" animation where there´s no dialogues and actually no need for them.

This fragment of Fantasia, Night on Bald Mountain, probably takes me to the first time I experienced fear other than in my nightmares...

"South London art collective Intoart was founded in 2001 by Guy Allott, Sam Jones and Ella Ritchie. Here the group present their distinctive approach to studio practice, that includes people who have a learning disability. The exhibition includes new work by Ntiense Eno Amooquaye, Selina Helene, Mawuena Kattah, Doreen McPherson, Philomena Powell and Clifton Wright with four short films which document the lives and working processes of the artists.

Alongside this exhibition, Whitechapel Gallery has commissioned theorist and art historian Malcolm Bull to reflect on the group’s work. Bull has used language articulated in the Intoart studio for a new text considering their collective working method. His commentary does not attempt to provide a definitive description of Intoart’s approach, rather, it offers scope for further reflection.

Architecture, sculpture, music and nature in perfect armony. Peine del Viento XV is situated in Donostia- San Sebastian, Basque Country, my home town. Creating a dialogue between the sea, the mountain and the limit of the city itself this is a very special place where when visited it has some magic to it, turning into a temple.

The three sculptures of Chillida are made of steel and are perforated in the actual rocks that resist the powerful waves of the Cantabrico Sea. Such an unsual location for sculpture makes you wonder how Chillida one day figured this out on his imagination. I guess that sculpture being a human act is often more about the human rather than anything else. This sculptures integrate so well with their simplicity and strength in relation to nature that it feels like they have always been there, having nothing to do with humans.

At the moment I am very busy working on a project to create an interesting space in London in collaboration with reputed artists and that will beneffit the community. I have been working on this for the last couple of months and it´s taking a lot of my time, so I´d like to apologize for those that check the blog every day and didn´t find as many posts as usual.
I´d also like to say that I was recently invited to talk about art for a couple of minutes once a month on a radio station in London; the first one will be next week. I will keep you informed.

Also, I´ve got three oil paints at the frame shop that will be hanged at The Eyre Brothers Restaurant in London very soon. I will also let you know about that.

“I am interested in portraits because I am surrounded by them everyday in the media. However I am not interested in drawing someone special but someone whom no one knows. I love to imagine the history and personality of a person simply through what they look like. I usually draw imaginary people rather than specific people because I have learned from many cases that we can never judge a person by his or her appearance. I am curious about what sorts of things can make a person be recognized/ differentiated from others. In order to find what the most important thing to differentiate people is, I create a lot of drawings. Through these drawings which were inspired by the public, I have made my "Imaginary portrait series." (Yuko Nasu /Sesame Gallery)

Yuko Nasu was born in Hiroshima and lives and works in London. Nasu´s paintings will be part of "Represent" at Blackall Studios in group show opening this coming thursday in Leonard Street, London. "Factory in London" 1972, by Lucian Freud. I guess this is an unsual work from a great painter mostly known for his powerful portraits often of naked bodies; but his style of painting is very recognisable. He paints in a way that it feels like he sculpts with thick colour. His paintings are very rich in materia and the viewer can almost breath the time Freud spent observing his model.

As you guys might know I have painted quite a bit of London, specially the East End. I´ve got some sort of attraction to London´s streets and its buidings. There´s something very intriguing about "the old" when it comes to architecture. Someone said the face of a person reflects their soul. The time Freud spent observing and painting definetly reflects something.

I saw this photography of Gilbert Garcin on Buamai, a select collective posting unique imagery from various sources with a focus on Graphic Design, Architecture, Fashion and Art.

Buamai is curated by César Pesquera, a director, graphic designer and audiovisual artist that is always involved in many interesting things. A while ago I posted "Passier 8", a great short film directed by Pesquera. I have only checked a little bit of of Buamai´s archive, and I got absorved by this fantastic photographs. by Garcin. Thanks to Vanessa Bejarano, who sent me the link of Buamai.

Soon I hope to post the new short film of Pesquera: "Círculo Uno". In the meantime, I am sure that I will reffer to Buamai many more times with great art works.

The beauty of the light in the silence. I think that on certain paintings there´s a certain colour that stands out, a colour that we remember and we associate with that painting. This is a painting of Hopper that stays in my mind.
On my memory that warm orange seems to stand out, and it is the key colour for me to actually remember the rest of the painting.

"I use the Financial Times newspaper stock listings as I think of the stock market as a global dream-world that literally flows through all of us. This for me is a contemporary form of landscape from where I take inspiration and fuse images from the Internet on computer before printing directly onto sections of the stock listings to jigsaw back together on canvas.

When I started using the stock listings around 12 years ago we were going through a digital and communications revolution. Mobile phone technology and the Internet were being made readily available and this totally reconfigured our perception of space time into a state of constant flux. There was talk about globalisation, cyberspace, global villages, information superhighways and digital frontiers – we experienced a kind of digital euphoria over the prospect of a potential Utopia. This of course dissipated with the tech stock dot com millionaire crash which was followed by the techno-hysteria over the Millennium bug. We then experienced the twin tower attacks that consequently gave us the War on Terror. So for me I am taking inspiration from what is around us rooted in that Utopic technological revolution and the consequent threatening waves of apocalypse.

If you look through the body of work recurring motifs do exist such as the ruinous skyscrapers, luminous voids and rainbows. They’re all symbols of hope and despair brought together into a beautiful dark ambiguity."(full interview)

"JR´s work is about much more than size. He uses surprise and humour and courage to break down boundaries between people. He takes his art on to the street and into war zones and places where art seems to have no place. He creates odd juxtapositions that forces people to ask questions and to smile.
He started by creating large stencils and then industrial-size photocopies of his pictures and pasting them up in the streets of Paris. He then took photographs of street scenes wich included his own fly-posted photographs or "photograffs". He posted these photographs in the streets as well."
"In the past two years JR has exporetd the idea of "grimaces for peace" across the globe. He took close-ups in Israel and Palestine of grimacing people who did the same jobs: taxi-drivers, hairdressers, chefs, security guards. He blew them up and stuck them side by side, on buildings on either side om the Israel-Palestinian divide and on the wall that separates Israel from the West Bank.
Wich were the grimacing Paelestinians? Wich were the grimacing Israelies? Most people could not tell. JR took pictures of Israelies and Palestinians staring at his pictures. He posted those up as well."

On my research to be able to post something new every day on this blog I find that certain artists lead me to others and this a good example. Ksenia Simonova´s work led me to Picasso, perhaps Guernica was the first painting that came to my mind. Watching the process of this artwork gives you an extra view and maybe a better understanding of the creative process of an artist.
I guess that sometimes the artist plans ahead what to draw or paint or sculpt; but I think that starting from a blank canvas and leting the creativity flow has something more interesting to it. Seeing that process of decissions that end up having a final result full of expression is the richest bit.

Ksenia Simonova and her amazing art performance. Using only a light box, sand and her hands she draws History, the invasion of Ukraine by the Naziz in 1941 and the end of it with the end of World War II in 1945.
It´s amazing to see this Ukranian artist doing a life animation with such simple media and getting a superb result that keeps the observer guessing what she´s going to create next with her hands moved by the music.
Definetly a prove that great results don´t necesarily depend on ridiculous expensive budgets and the most ultimate technologies.

"Brazil is famed for carrying a sense of the carnivalesque in everyday life. You can smell and taste it even if the festivities are a long way away.

The work of Os Gemeos ("The Twins") reflects this celebration as they offer audiences a vibrant taste of everyday life portrayed through a fantastic caste of characters, real and imagined.

Largely self-taught, the brothers started out by tagging the streets with the name "Os Gemeos" in their distinctive style. Later, they started to weave surreal narratives of Brazilian subconsciousness into their graffiti.

Over the years their street painting reached such high levels that officials invited them to paint Brazilian trains.

Now, they're equally at home on the street and in museum and galleries. While still tagging Os Gemeos, their work has been recognized by the Tate Modern in London, MAM in Sao Paulo, Museum Het Domein in The Netherlands and Deitch Projects in New York.
This summer Deitch Projects is showing the largest gallery exhibition of Os Gemeos to date. Called Too Far Too Close, the show fills the gallery with the dreams and fantasies of Brazil: street kids, family portraits with mermaids, bathing girls, street musicians, favelas, flying animals, clowns and the reoccurring theme of twinship.

"Gerhard Richter was born in Dresden in 1932 to a middle class family. Like many Germans of his generation, his relatives were involved in the Nazi movement; his mother's brother, Uncle Rudi died a young Nazi officer, while Richter's mentally disabled aunt was imprisoned in a Hitler euthanasia camp. Rigorous ideology and death have haunted Richter since he was just a child, perhaps causing his strong dislike for ideology of any kind and underpinning the attraction that nature, as an indiscriminate force, holds for him."

His early work is of blurred figurative paintings, both with and without colour followed by seductive abstract paintings, with a colour palette that is either brilliant or subdued. His own and other people's photographs, the sum total of the media image archives, the images of art history, the cinema, music, architecture, sports, landscapes -they are all realities in his studio that call forth but do not model his paintings. In his works, these realities overlap, generating the present as a juncture of places, times, ideas and styles. In the composition, all the methods of image generation from photography, film, and painting, as well as painterly reproduction techniques are used: the optical options of photography make use of perspectives, relations of size, and segmentation; his painterly technique uses all the artifice of art history: the specific styles of Segantini, van Gogh, Munch and Edward Hopper appear just as much as pointillist effects, impressionist traits, Pollockian all-over patterns, clumsily-naive illustrative techniques, or water colour effects painted in oil. In so doing, Doig's painting insists on the triviality of painting as such, allowing itself to become hypersensitive, or smudging its contours, or cancelling itself out."

" Turner's talent was recognised early in his life. Financial independence allowed Turner to innovate freely; his mature work is characterised by a chromatic palette and broadly applied atmospheric washes of paint. According to David Piper's The Illustrated History of Art, his later pictures were called "fantastic puzzles." However, Turner was still recognised as an artistic genius: the influential English art critic John Ruskin described Turner as the artist who could most "stirringly and truthfully measure the moods of Nature." "Suitable vehicles for Turner's imagination were to be found in the subjects of shipwrecks, fires , natural catastrophes, and natural phenomena such as sunlight, storm, rain, and fog. He was fascinated by the violent power of the sea.

Turner placed human beings in many of his paintings to indicate his affection for humanity on the one hand , but its vulnerability and vulgarity amid the 'sublime' nature of the world on the other hand. 'Sublime' here means awe-inspiring, savage grandeur, a natural world unmastered by man, evidence of the power of God - a theme that artists and poets were exploring in this period. The significance of light was to Turner the emanation of God's spirit and this was why he refined the subject matter of his later paintings by leaving out solid objects and detail, concentrating on the play of light on water, the radiance of skies and fires. Although these late paintings appear to be 'impressionistic' and therefore a forerunner of the French school, Turner was striving for expression of spirituality in the world, rather than responding primarily to optical phenomena."(wikipedia)
